Minister’s Message 15 December
On Sunday we mark the Third Sunday of Advent, traditionally called Gaudete Sunday. In Latin, 'Gaudete' means 'rejoice!' and this week we light the candle of joy on our Advent wreath, following the candles of hope and peace earlier in the month.
Having looked so far at the 'legends' who were the Patriarchs and the 'critics' who were the Prophets we come this week to think about our 'peers' and to focus on the story of John the Baptist who was one of us, tasked (as we are) with heralding the coming of Jesus and proclaiming the coming Kingdom of God. So I invite you to join the journey of reflection leading us towards the heart of our Christmas celebrations in ten days' time.
In the midst of all the celebrations of the season, we do well to call to mind those who are facing difficulties and sadness and to be sensitive to those for whom this time of year is particularly hard. On Monday evening at 6.30pm we hold our annual quiet service of remembrance and thanksgiving which gives space for those who are mourning the death of a loved one or indeed some other kind of loss – a change of circumstances or On Monday evening at 6.30pm we hold our annual quiet service of remembrance and thanksgiving which gives space for those who are mourning the death of a loved one or indeed some other kind of loss – a change of circumstances, a redundancy or a decrease in well-being perhaps because of illness or disability.
All are welcome at that service in the church and streamed online, but whether or not you join in the service, please take time this week to remember in your prayers those who are going through hard times for it is part of our Advent journey to confront the darkness and let the Light shine, to stare suffering and death in the face and proclaim the victory of Christ.
Drawing closer to Christmas, on Friday evening at 7.00pm we have the opportunity to join in a community carol celebration with music led by Ian White and the Inspiration Orchestra. You are encouraged to invite family, friends and neighbours to this event which will be very informal. Gaudete! Rejoice! Christ is coming and the Kingdom of God is near.
With all prayerful good wishes,
Alan
